new puritan

The Puritans deserve the right to be appreciated having overcome many challenges  on their long journey to civilization. In the story "Of Plymouth Plantation", by William Bradford, it talks about the voyage that the Pilgrims made to come to Americas. The Puritans faced various challenges such as, winter’s blistery storms and their own trust in God.
The season of winter was a struggle that the Puritans faced, “And for the season it was winter, and they that know the winters of that country know them to be sharp and violent, and subject to cruel and fierce storms, dangerous to travel to known places, much more to search an unknown coast” (pg. 123). The Puritans landed in Cape Cod and could not further continue their voyage due to the winter storms. Unfortunately, half of the company perished throughout that winter of 1620, leaving only six or seven in good condition. Those few people took care of the ill, washed the clothing, made the fires, etc. Not only was it difficult for the Puritans to survive the winter, another hardship was keeping faith in God.
At the beginning of the story God displays great power, “But it pleased God before they came half seas over, to smite this young man with grievous disease, of which he died in a desperate manner, and so was himself the first that was thrown overboard” (pg 120). The seaman is an example of someone going against God's will and authority, having done very ungrateful things. He cursed at God, thought about only himself, and did not tend to the sick. This led to his own self-destruction, in belief that you must do as God has asked or else there will be further consequences.
This story took place from 1620-1647 and is recognized and is known as one of the most accurate references in American history. Plymouth Plantation dealt with the pilgrims looking for religious freedom and persecution of those who would accept their church. Bradford profoundly displayed the arrival and settlement of the Puritans and the accompanying years of hardships. Throughout their journey you can see the struggles that they faced with God and the land.

I only had one peer revision and after reading that I changed up the last paragraph. They wrote saying that my third paragraph went off topic. After reading it again I concluded that it didn’t go off topic, but I believe they were misguided because the two paragraphs didn’t exactly involve each other. One good thing they said is that I didn’t restate the thesis clearly in the conclusion. So I took that advice and tried to tie the thesis in a little better. Overall the person who revised me said that they liked it and it was well written. I took their advice and took it into mind rereading and changing what I could.

Football

This past year I played on the Varsity football team for my high school. It was an unbelievable season where friendships were made will last a lifetime. We had an unfortunate loss in the second round of the playoffs ending our season. This was by far the hardest loss I have ever had, I have lost games before even playoff games, but there was nothing like this. Not just me, but the whole team we put so much time and effort into preparing for the season. Then for the seniors, Man that sucks that was the last time for a lot of them that they will ever put on pads and step on a field. With this happening it makes me more motivated for next year to be the best that I can. I am lucky that I have another year to play football and hopefully play at the next level. Look at all the hot shots out there, all of the hall of famers, all of the pro bowlers. I know for a fact that they lost games, and even championships at times. The thing is they never gave up they kept on pushing improving to get better each and everyday its what they do. Look at Michael Jordan for an example he didn't even make his high school basketball team and now is one of the most famous basketball players ever. Knowing that its possible just gives me a little more push to try harder and become even better. I recently met up with my recruiter and he told me something that I've never really thought about before. Some of the people that I'm competing with trying to get scholarships, they are literally are fighting for there lives. If they don't get that scholarship there not going to college. They are trying to be the first ones in there family to ever go to college or maybe even graduate high school. It just makes me more grateful that this isn't my last hope that if I don't get that scholarship  that I will still be going to college. Not just this, but I also gave my recruiter my top college options and it just makes me more and more excited knowing that my dream is coming true and its just around the corner.

Thanksgiving Break

It was nice to have a break off school having nothing to worry about, at least school wise. I really like these week long break without having plans, being able to sleep in, eat whenever. In my case I spent the week hanging out with friends, going to bad at four AM and just not caring about anything.
Some may say its not good for kids to get such long breaks because lose of memory. Then why give us summer? why not just put a bunch of two week breaks throughout the year? In my opinion you lose most of your memory throughout the summer. The flaw of that is that I don't believe kids have the attention spand of going to school year round with little breaks. I just don't see how its possible unless you truly do love every second of school.

Today I Read

Today I read an article called "RG3 endorses Alfred Morris" by ESPN.com. The article was talking about how RG3 believes that his teammate deserves the rookie of the year award. RG3 listed off the reasons why he believed that and not just on the field, but of the field too.
To me its just crazy how RG3 an animal out on the field amazing athlete himself talks so highly of a teammate. In my opinion I think that its cool that such a high profile athlete can talk so highly about another high profile athlete

hypnosis

Recently I watched a Tv show on hypnosis and about how far that it could go. They took four people and took them through at first just some simple hypnosis things like act like a monkey. Once they saw that they could all by hypnotised, they began the process of four stages. Stage one and two were still pretty simple with all four contenders easily getting through it, troubles came at stage three. It was to lay in water at 34 degrees for three minutes. The first two lasted a soaring 15 seconds, and the third doubling them lasting 30 seconds. It wasn't until all their hope was given up when the last contender lasted the bearing cold for all two minutes. He was the only one to move on to the final stage, assassination. Could someone be under hypnosis so much that they could be triggered to kill someone? The answer is yes, he 'assassinated' a man under hypnosis. Obviously this was an experiment and no one was actually killed or injured.
This is rather scary to me, I would be terrified if I was the one that 'killed' someone. The way they presented this was rather well, with showing scenes of whats happening with the experiment and then an experts view. They had camera angles from every angle and were hidden adding to the suspense. I would be interested in watching more shows like this were they see just how far they could push the ability of a human brain. Also it would good for them to maybe show a video of what goes on in the brain while under hypnosis.

Snickers vs Three musketeers

A discussion between the two candy bars snickers and three musketeers is necessary to see which one is truly the greatest. This issue remains a mystery and only now we discuss this unknown mystery. Snickers and three musketeers share the same outside layer which is chocolate making them in some way the same.
The key idea between the snickers and the three musketeers is what they are made of.  In the snickers bar we see that it is made up with crunchy peanuts that add that extra kick to it. The peanuts are significant because they add that extra flavor and texture that the three musketeers does not. In addition to the peanuts snickers also has a creamy caramel that'll give you that longer lasting taste in your mouth. The caramel is significant because like the peanuts, it adds an extra texture and taste that gives you that sticky goo.
On the other hand three musketeers makes a stand and differs itself from any other type of candy bar. The three musketeers is simple with really only two ingredients giving it that taste that can be distinguished easily. To begin with there is a simple chocolate covering which makes an impact because who doesn't love chocolate? The chocolate gives it that little crunch that gives you the traditional texture of any candy bar. What makes them different is that the inside is purely made of nougat filling and thats it, as simple as that. This gives them an advantage because maybe people don't like all the flavors and textures that another candy bar has to offer.
Clearly we have discussed the difference between the two candy bars, snickers and three musketeers. The unique flavors which make up the insides of the two are clearly different with minor similarities. Ultimately the snickers bar is the all time winner with a combination of all great things, but still being fairly simple.

Today I Read 11/1/12

Today I read an article called "Brien Taylor facing up to 40 years", by ESPN.com. The article was talking about how Taylor a first round draft pick in the MLB is facing up to 40 years. He got this charge due to three offenses of crack cocaine distribution. I think it's crazy how someone that so many people use to look up to can just throw away their life like that.

Journal entry shame and DOI

The stories are not similar in the way they are written, but the meaning of it is the same. In the story the daughter of Invention, the daughter feels out of place and not accepted because she is foreign and new. In the story Shame the boy also wants to be accepted, not only is he black, but he also is missing a daddy. The stories both go on and end in different ways were one story they learn to accept themselves and the other they don't.

OSU vs. UTAH

This past weekend I took a trip down to Corvallis at Reser stadium. I was going down to watch OSU play at home verse the Utah Utes. Now personally I like Utah better just because I know their coach and know the program. On the other hand my best friend loves OSU he's the definition of bleeding orange and that is who I went with. When we were at the campus it was crazy packed!!! I've been to games before but not to recently and with OSU winning all these games it was way different. The game itself isn't really what I wanted to talk about but more so the fact of all the bandwagoning. It use to be were about 75% of the seats were filled up, not bad also not good. At this game I swear there was't a single seat available! Jammed packed, Not only the stadium also the streets and campus itself. It just so unique how so many people can just jump from team to team. There are those people who just follow the good teams, and let me say it the teams love it! Packed stands at every game without a single seat available, what team wouldn't love that? Yes there is also always 'that guy' who will go to the game wearing an Oregon sweatshirt just there to antagonize there rivals. There is also the guy who will be decked out in the opposing teams gear in a packed section of OSU fans. On the car ride home I was thinking about all of this and how strange fans really are. If you ever get really bored and want to people watch I highly suggest going to watch fans at a sporting event.

Today I Read 10/30/12

Today I read an article called "Youth coaches face gambling charges" , By ESPN. The article was talking about how in southern florida youth coaches are gambling on their games. Now yes the games in reality aren't that big or important, but with coaches putting 20,000 dollars on game, it becomes a little more important. Nine coaches are being faced with charges and with five of them with criminal records they could be facing five years in jail. They have been under investigation for the past 12 months with recent evidence that backs up there statements.

Today I Read 10/30/12

Today I read an article called "BCS lawsuit suspended", by ESPN.com. The article was talking about how a Utah attorney has a potential lawsuit against the BCS for an illegal monopoly. The suit has been plotted for the past three years by Mark Shurtleff, but has never been filed. The lawsuit is about how the BCS is damaging some schools making them lose millions of dollars such as Utah and Boise State. Shurtleff is leaving the office at the end of the year and says there isn't enough evidence to file it yet. He said I'll pass the case onto the next attorney and one day it will be filed and the BCS will be charged.

sentence analysis shame

1) "I never learned hate at home, or shame.” Sentence pattern 4 is the closest to it, but it is incorrectly punctuated because "shame" isn't an independent clause. The sentence focuses on hate and shame. The comma + shame shows more emphasis on shame. It foreshadows the shadow of the story and that it will focus on shame.

2)“She’d walk down my street, and my brothers and sisters would yell, ‘Here comes Helene,” and I’d rub my tennis sneakers on the back of my pants and wish my hair wasn’t so nappy and the white folks’ shirt fit me better.” This is sentence pattern 9 because of the quotes. This sentence gives us the picture that Richard is the wealthiest kid and that he doesn't get the nicest stuff. It also gives us a better understanding about how Richard wishes he had things that he no matter what can't get because of his circumstances.

3)“And she had a daddy, and he had a good job." This is sentence pattern 4 because before and after the comma are independent clause. The writer uses this sentence because it shows that Helene has what Richards wants. It is written in that settle, but almost depressing mood showing how he feels.

4)“The idiot’s seat, the troublemaker’s seat.” Sentence pattern 5 is the closest but neither part of the sentences is really independent. This sentence is used to describe how Richard believes that society looks at him.

Journal 10/18/12

I believe that the message of the story was never give up. I think this because the girl in the story wrote a story and even though her father told her not to do it and shut her done, her mom encouraged her not to give up. Before that when she was just writing the story her mom told don't give up you know you can do this and helped her out.

Narrative Essay

-->                 My name is Chandler and I have selected to interview my father, Michael about his time growing up. I am 16 years old and a junior in High school that is highly involved in sports. I have chosen to interview my dad because out of all my family members he is the most interesting.
He was born in Taiwan and moved to the US when he was the age 6. He grew up in Plain View, Utah. He graduated High School from Weber High with his 4.0 GPA. He wasn't involved in many extra curricular things and focused more on work and school. When he was 16 years old, he got his first real job as janitor at plain view Elementary school. His favorite movie growing up was Star Wars, because it was the first movie with all the special effects and it was one of the first movies that he saw on a big screen. When he was younger he always dreamed of being a pediatrician, he always enjoyed kids and knew that the job could provide for a family.
My dad is the oldest of three children in his family, with a younger half-brother and younger half-sister. His father left him at a young age and only recently have the reconnected. His mother got remarried and that's when she had two more kids but they are distantly younger than him. He doesn't know a lot of his family other than the immediate ones because they still currently live in Taiwan. The closest family member to him would have to be his Grandmother. Luckily, my mom's family is very accepting and as basically adopted him into their lives and the family.
Growing up, he struggled, when he first moved to America he knew zero English and had to learn the language while in school. Not only did he not know the language, but he was also the only non-Caucasian in his school making it easy to be made fun of. He struggled even through High School making it hard to enjoy anything from his youth. When he was 19 years old, he served a mission for the Church of Later-day saints that changed his life. On his mission, he truly found out who he was and had a better understanding of life itself. He also refers to the fact that the struggles of his youth make him the person he is today.
Another topic that he talked about is how things have changed since he was a child. One thing that he emphasized strongly was the media. It bewilders him how as a nation we just allow the vulgar language and can curse on cable TV. Not just only that, but also how there was no Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and any other social networking site. When he was a teenager he said, "I would always get in trouble for using the house phone connected to the wall". This was a problem for him because it was the only phone they had so they had to share, not just that, but also they weren't that wealthy and that costed a lot of money. He also brought up the point about how children have changed since he was once one himself. "They don't embrace work like they used to" he said. Also the opportunity for them to be involved in sports is much greater, with now having Jv's and freshman teams.
Interviewing my dad taught me that everyone has struggles and there are ways to get past them. He went through a lot having moved here from a foreign country and having his father leave him. Now I understand why he works so hard and makes sure that we kids have a good childhood.

Today I read 10/18/12

Today I read an article called "Tim Tebow might play RB" By ESPN.com. The article was talking about how The Jets are low in running backs due to injuries and potentially could use Tebow. Tebow the Jets official backup quarterback already has wildcat plays designed for him to run the ball. With no back up running backs it leads everyone to the question whether or not Tebow could be playing back there. My personal opinion is that I think he may see some time back there but not as much as people are hoping for. I 100% believe that he should be switched to there full time, he has the body type and the skills for the position.
I ended up watching the game and he did get a little running back time. Frankly in my opinion towards the end they should have kept him there and could have potentially
won the game! With all there backups injured and with there starter getting hit hard Tebow was their best option. Even the news reporters were surprised about how little they were using him, with just a little wildcat he only had 3 carries. If the rest of the RB squad doesn't get healthy by next weeks game I don't know what other options they have. Hopefully the Jets figure things out and become effective with the resources that they have.

part of narrative

My name is Chandler and I have selected to interview my father, Michael about his time growing up. I am 16 years old and a junior at (OUR)  High school that is highly involved in sports. I choose to interview my dad because out of all my family members I have the closest relationship with him and share most my experiences with him. Not only that but he shares interesting Experiences having moved from a foreign country

Is this long enough?
Does this 1st paragraph make you want to continue?
What else could I add to improve my writing?

Journal 10/10/12

The oldest person that I remember in my family would have to be my great grandmother. She is in her mid 90's and lives in the same house. I don't know much about her childhood, but there are somethings that I do remember. I do remember that she grew up in Utah and that when she was younger she would play with the horses that lived on the ranch next door. She also went through world war 2, but she doesn't really like to talk about that. Yes she is the oldest person that I know, but the truth is I just don't know a ton about her.

Who I Am

My mission in life is to be as successful as I can, by reaching my full potential in everything that I do. I don't believe in starting something and then cutting it short and quitting. I believe that I am a very generous person and I care about others and their success. Im not one of those people that is going to change just because someone wants me to, I am who I am and I wont change for anyone. In the honest truth though if you asked someone else who I am it would be difficult for them to say. I don't think i've been alive long enough to truly impact people to know the real person that I am. Yes I am 16, but half of my life I just did what ever my parents told me to do and lived my life through them. When I can look back in life and name off all of the experiences that make me the person I am thats when I will know who I am.

My first kiss went a little like this

I was in the first grade just a young one, Still chasing girls around the playground but at the same time still believed in cooties. It was a grey sky type of day I woke up that morning knowing something was a little fishy about the day. I got ready for school, same old routine, walked out the door and down my long driveway waiting for the bus. As I stood there waiting for my bus with my lunch box in one hand I looked up in the sky and once again got that funny feeling. I got onto the bus and sat in my normal seat by myself like usual. We get to the next bus stop and here comes this new girl, and what does she do, seats down right next to me. Of course she does at first I didn't think much about it until she tried to talk to me, thats when things went downhill. Obviously being the gentlemen I am at age 7 I respond to her and start a little conversation. Now before I continue don't get me wrong this girl was drop dead gorgeous, prettiest girl I've ever seen. We start really getting into the conversation, it was getting intense, to intense for a little kid like me. Then it happened, she got on top of me and starting sucking my face!! I quickly pushed her off and almost started gagging, the kid across the aisle starting full on barfing! Yeah she was pretty and all but everyone knows that girls have cooties! For the rest of that long bus ride to school we sat silently with a stench of fish sticks in the air. I never saw that girl again, I’m very thankful for that because I don’t know what I would do with myself if I saw her again.

This is what I learned today-9/28/12

Today I read an article "Officials get standing ovation" on the ESPN website by the associated press. The article was talking about how the refs had made an agreement and ended the lockout. They also talked about how the refs had made better decisions then the replacement refs and that none of the calls were wrongly given. A little before the game had started between the Ravens and the Browns, the officials got a standing ovation by the entire stadium. Ray Lewis, Ravens leading linebacker, before the game came up to one of the officials and gave him a hug saying "glad to have you back".
I personally am overwhelmed with joy that the officials are back, They have the most experience and they are confident in the decisions that they make. They deserved a standing ovation, numerous amounts of calls affected games that were made by the replacement officials. Obviously fans are still going to boo and hate on calls, but that's part of what makes the game so great.

Judging

Getting judged is something that happens on a daily basis, but only sometimes does it noticed. A few years ago I was judged in a class full of students by my teacher and I was being set up for failure. We were doing presentations in class and I was nervous, I knew that my teacher didn't think I was paying attention that whole unit. We were suppose to be presenting to a fellow classmate of our choice, but of course just my luck my partner was MIA. Unwillingly, but with no other choice I was partnered with my teacher. I got up there and kids started giggling knowing that this presentation was going to go horribly wrong. Unknown to them I knew everything, when I know that I'm being judged or being set up for failure, Its my goal to prove them wrong and show them that I can do it. Not a lot of people think I'm the smartest kid just by looking at me, but if they just give me a chance I can show them everything. I got up to the front of class and rocked it all, My teacher was in aw and after class admitted to the fact that she was surprised. Everyone gets judged, Its up to you choose what the outcome is.
